Introducing Your Columbia Fireflies

This morning, the City of Columbia and our awesome Mayor Steve Benjamin joined with local developers and business leaders to announce the name of our great city’s new baseball team: the Columbia Fireflies.

The name was initially met with some degree of consternation among the local social media elite. But then the freshly-minted team released this video and well, . consider the consternation sufficiently quelled.

It’s hard not to get excited about the name and what it represents for us. And as a city that prides itself on passionately rooting on its beloved Gamecocks, we’ve become quite used to cheering for a team with a monicker that may make rivals raise their eyebrows.

All I can say is I can’t wait for this spring when the Fireflies, a Single-A affiliate of the New York Mets, begin play at Spirit Communications Park in the heart of the newly renovated Bull Street property in Columbia that for so long remained a vacant drain on this city.

Play ball!
